It seems Ravi Bopara does not exist in the future plans of England.
After the series against Australia, the all rounder has now been overlooked for the UAE tour as well.
His name was missing from both the limited-over squads that the selectors announced yesterday for the Pakistan games.
It was being thought that Bopara had a good chance of making the squad for his ability to tackle the spin well and also, for his slow seam bowling which generally happens to be of good effect on the dusty pitches.
There were talks of the Premier English all rounder Ben Stokes having played a lot of Cricket in the summer and needing some rest and thus, in that scenario, Bopara’s recall was very much likely.
But, probably the selectors felt that going back to Bopara would be a backward step and would be in contrast to their mission of building a young team keeping the big ICC tournaments of future in mind.
However, if seen age wise, Bopara is not that old. He celebrated only his 30th birthday earlier this year. So, there must be a lot of limited-over Cricket still left in his body and if he works hard on his fitness, there is no reason why he can’t keep himself in proper shape till the next World Cup.
So, even if the motive of the selectors is to look towards future, Bopara is not someone whom they can’t take into account.
And, he is quite an aggressive Cricketer, Bopara. It’s not that he is of old school and he would not fit in the new style that England has adopted after the World Cup.
If he scores runs and takes wickets for his county, he must be handed another chance for he has it in him to facilitate England in white ball Cricket.
